Samson leads Rajasthan to victory

Sanju Samson bludgeoned an unbeaten half century as Rajasthan Royals beat Royal Challengers Bangalore by 19 runs in their Indian Premier League match at the M Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru on Sunday.

Full scorecard: RCB v RR

Batting first, Samson clubbed 92 not out in the Royals’ total of 217 for four wickets after which the visitors restricted the much-vaunted Bangalore batting line-up to 198 for six in reply.

It was the Royals’ second consecutive victory after their 10-run triumph over Delhi Daredevils last Wednesday while the Royal Challengers have now suffered two defeats in their three matches.

There was a half century for captain Virat Kohli (57 off 30) and contributions at the top of the order of 26 from Quinton de Kock and 20 from AB de Villiers but those efforts fell short of what was required on the night.

All three of them holed out in the deep chasing boundaries when level heads were probably required.

Mandeep Singh (47 not out) and Washington Sundar (35) tried manfully until the end but the required run rate became more and more difficult.

Young legspinner Shreyas Gopal accounted for both Kohli and De Villiers while returning tidy figures of 2-22 in his four overs.

After the Royals were asked to bat first, 23-year-old Samson registered his 18th half century in this format of the game.

But they got off to a watchful start and were eight without loss after two overs. Ajinkya Rahane then got stuck into offspinner Washington Sundar in the third over, hitting him four and then six to get the ball rolling.

He also took seamer Umesh Yadav for two boundaries in the next over but he eventually fell for 36, dragging a slow and wide Chris Woakes delivery to Yadav at mid-on. His runs came off just 20 balls and included six fours and the one six.

Eight balls later, and Rahane’s opening partner D’Arcy Short, who never seemed settled, was well-caught by wicketkeeper De Kock off the legspin of Yuvzendra Chahal for 11.

Ben Stokes then added a well-struck 27 before Samson and Jos Buttler (23) set about their impressive partnership of 73 in only six overs.

Heading into the death overs, Samson turned on the afterburners and he ended up striking all of 10 sixes and two fours in only 45 deliveries.

Chahal was the best of the Bangalore bowlers, taking 2-22.
